Harper Business How Work Works: The Subtle Science Of Getting Ahead Without Losing Yourself By Michelle P. King - Hardback Non Fiction Career Guide

Condition: BRAND NEW Format: Hardback ISBN: 9780063224575 Publisher: Harper Business Overview: How Work Works is a revelatory guide from organisational expert Dr Michelle P. King, uncovering the hidden, unwritten rules that truly determine career success. Drawing on two decades of research into how workplaces really function, King shows why talent and hard work alone rarely guarantee advancement. Instead, she reveals how to read informal networks, adapt to shifting workplace cultures, and build genuine influence. Practical, research-backed and refreshingly honest, this hardback is essential reading for anyone who wants to get ahead in their career while staying true to who they are. About the Book: In How Work Works, Dr Michelle P. King distils more than ten years of organisational research and interviews with hundreds of professionals who reached leadership positions into a practical framework for career success. Rather than relying on outdated advice, King argues that understanding an organisation's unwritten rules is the real key to getting ahead. The book is structured around five core areas: navigating informal networks, developing self-awareness, adapting to change, securing advancement, and finding lasting fulfilment at work. King combines rigorous research with real workplace stories, making complex organisational dynamics feel accessible and immediately applicable. Readers learn to identify who really holds influence, build authentic relationships that open doors, and recognise the biases and politics that can otherwise derail a career. Crucially, the book does not encourage readers to compromise their values to succeed; instead, it offers strategies for achieving ambitions while remaining authentic. Named an Inc. Magazine Non-Obvious Book Awards pick, How Work Works has resonated with professionals at every career stage, from graduates entering the workforce to senior leaders navigating organisational change. It is a book about career strategy, but also about wellbeing, belonging and staying true to yourself under pressure. Reveals the unwritten rules of workplace success based on over a decade of original research Offers a clear five-part framework covering networks, self-awareness, adaptability, advancement and fulfilment Written by a leading organisational behaviour expert and executive consultant Named an Inc. Magazine Non-Obvious Book Awards pick Practical and research-backed, with real workplace examples throughout Ideal gift for graduates, professionals and anyone navigating career growth About the Author: Dr Michelle P. King is an organisational behaviour expert who has spent over two decades researching gender equality, inclusion and workplace culture for leading global companies. She has held senior roles advising major organisations on how to build fairer, more effective workplaces, and her work has been featured widely in international media. King's research focuses on uncovering the subtle, often invisible barriers that hold talented people back, and translating that research into practical guidance readers can use immediately in their own careers. Why You'll Love This Book: Honest, research-driven and genuinely useful, How Work Works cuts through vague career advice to explain what actually drives success at work. It's the guide every ambitious professional wishes they'd had sooner. Please Note: Cover may vary slightly from image shown; this is the UK edition with UK ISBN as listed.
